YMCA she leads workshop

Are you looking to develop or improve your management style, be a better leader, and work better as a team member?

The next YWCA Canberra She Leads workshop presented by Lightbulb Improv is designed to explore how improvisation skills build confidence in presentation and performance in the workplace. It will include an overview of the basic principles of improvisation, discussion on how improvisation can be used in the workplace, and practical examples of how the facilitators have used these skills in their professional careers.

Ultimately, this workshop is about professional skills. You may not realise it, but improv is built on a foundation of rules that teach us to actively listen, to accept the current situation, and to find creative ways to address problems. Improv also teaches us how to feel more confident, voice our ideas and concerns, fosters authenticity, and nurtures a team-orientated atmosphere.

How can improvised theatre help you?

It may not be obvious when you watch a show like ‘Whose Line Is It Anyway’, but to really work, good improvised theatre (or ‘improv’) relies on certain key principles which are also essential in the workplace. For example: negotiation, status, communicating with purpose, active listening, focus, and effectively reading and responding to non-verbal cues (et al).

About the facilitators

The workshop is designed and facilitated by Lightbulb Improv – Corporate. Lightbulb Improv – Corporate is one arm of Lightbulb Improv, a local organisation which also also holds theatre performances and will soon be expanding into community workshops. Lightbulb Improv was established by three women, all parents of young children, who wanted to build something that could be a creative outlet, contribute to the local community, and help pay the bills — as well as work around family commitments. A big ask! All three co-founders agree the juggle is a challenge, but totally worthwhile.

Register online. Cost: $50 (members) or $60 (non-members).
