Women's Political Representation: Two Local Parliament Case Studies in Indonesia

Despite the controversies surrounding gender quotas, over 100 countries now have some form of quotas, a more than four fold increase since 1980 (Krook, 2009: 4). Quotas are seen as an effective tool to increase women's representation in parliament, often leading to a dramatic increase. This paper will discuss the selection process for candidates, gender quota implementation and results of the 2009 elections.
