The second in the 2013 Gender Institute Seminar Series, Women in Academia, which was to be presented by Stina Powell, PhD Candidate and Project Leader, Centre for Gender Research Uppsala University, and Department for Urban and Rural Development, Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences, Sweden, has unfortunately been cancelled.

In Sweden today, gender equality is not a contested concept. "Everyone" in the public sphere agrees with it, and in a period during the early 2000s "everyone" said they were feminists. Feminist researchers argue that gender equality is a concept that has lost its political power and instead of being a challenging political project to fight inequalities, it has become part of a neoliberal agenda boiled down to administration. This is also why everyone agrees, it is no longer a threat to status quo.

Even so, our project shows that challenging norms and ideas about women and men in academia and particularly in the classrooms, meets resistance. I will present the project for which I was the leader between 2010 and mid 2013. The key question was: what happens when you introduce gender and norm-critical perspectives on pedagogy in this particular setting? The projects' aims and visions took us beyond what was considered appropriate in this particular setting and asked for more than the university was willing to give.
