Violence affecting women and children in Vietnam in the comparative perspective with other ASEAN Countries

This public seminar will talk specifically on the issues of Violence affecting Women and Children in Vietnam. Ms Le Thu was the Vietnam consultant for a major study from the ASEAN Human Rights Resource Center (HRRC) and initiated research on the issues of Violence, Exploitation, and Abuse and Discrimination in Migration Affecting Women and Children in ASEAN: A Baseline Study. This is the first such comprehensive study that compiles, categorizes and analyzes social, economic, cultural, and legal aspects of the issues in all ten ASEAN countries.

Ms Le Thu will give an overview on the prevalence of the problem, legal definitions and responses to VAW in Vietnam, as well as analyse the weaknesses in the legal system through socio-cultural conditions. The country report highlights root-causes through analysis of gender stereotypes and their impact on the effectiveness of national and international legal responses. Vietnam shall be situated in the comparative perspective with the other nine ASEAN countries in finding commonalities, gaps and challenges for ASEAN collective response mechanisms. Ms Le Thu will also offer some reflections on the ASEAN Commission on the Promotion and Protection of the Rights of Women and Children (ACWC), created in 2011.

Dr Susan Harris Rimmer from the APCD will chair the session.
