Seminar: Minding the gap: culture and gender in Vietnam

This seminar asks question: Can there be cultural justification for gender-based discrimination? Based on empirical findings on Violence, Exploitation and Discrimination in Migration Affecting Women in Vietnam, this research goes a step further in searching for an explanation for the social “permission” for abuse against women. The traditional norms and imaginary of female in Vietnam have been heavily influenced by Confucianism thoughts. To what extent can Confucianism be held responsible for gender imbalance in contemporary Vietnam? This study examines the influence of social practice on the legal system while solving gender-based discrimination.
