Respectful maternity care - contemporary approaches

This workshop will explore Respectful Maternity Care - Contemporary Approaches – the challenges and opportunities. The day will be interactive, delving into the many facets that contribute to respectful maternity care. A woman’s experience of maternity care will influence the outcomes of her birth, the success of her mothering career, and the long-term wellness of her child.

Safe Motherhood is more than the prevention of death and disability. It is respect for every woman’s humanity, feelings, choices, and preferences. Every woman receiving maternity care should feel valued, respected, and appreciated by those who aid her in bringing new life into the world. While many interventions aim to improve access to skilled birth care, less attention has been focused on the quality of relationships with caregivers during maternity care. Considerable evidence indicates that respecting and partnering with women - respectful care - is an essential component of safe care.

Safe Motherhood for All is working to improve maternal health by promoting and advocating for respectful maternity care for all women during pregnancy, childbirth, and in the time after birth. The information collected at the symposium will be written up and made publicly available.

Morning tea and lunch will be provided. Registration is donation of $50, to cover costs. Please see the attached flyer and registration form for details.

The Respectful Maternity Care Charter - The Universal Rights of Childbearing Women- focuses specifically on the interpersonal aspects of care received by women seeking maternity services, delineating how human rights are implicated in the childbearing process and affirming their application to childbearing women as basic, inalienable rights.
