Images of extraordinarily thin women are everywhere. When women see these images, their self-esteem may consequently lower, and potentially develop into an eating disorder. Governments internationally have taken action as a result. In particular, the Israeli and French Governments passed ‘Photoshop Laws’. The ‘Photoshop Laws’ require models to have a minimum BMI in order to work, and if an image is photoshopped, it must state that it has been edited.

Marilyn will discuss the Photoshop Laws and the efforts (or lack thereof) that the Australian Government and other governments overseas have taken in this area. Due to the increasing number of people who suffer from eating disorders, Marilyn’s research is significant and very timely.

Dr Marilyn Bromberg-Krawitz is a Senior Lecturer at The University of Notre Dame Australia Law School (Fremantle Campus) and a solicitor at Janssen and Maluga Legal. She was born and raised in Toronto, Canada, where she graduated with a BBA (Hon) from the Schulich School of Business at York University. While a business student, Marilyn founded and managed her own magazine, On The Wall, for three years. In 2006, Marilyn moved to Perth. Marilyn then completed an LLB (Dist) at the University of Western Australia and she worked as an articled clerk and solicitor at a medium sized law firm.

Marilyn completed her PhD in 2014. The title of her PhD is An Examination of Social Media’s Impact upon the Courts in Australia. Marilyn spoke about her PhD research at Harvard University, the Supreme Court of Canada and the Supreme Court of Western Australia, among other venues.  Marilyn spoke about her body image and the law research at The University of Melbourne and at a Victorian Women Lawyers event. She has written about her body image and the law research for peer reviewed legal journals and The Sydney Morning Herald and The West Australian. Marilyn completed her Graduate Certificate in University Teaching in 2015.
