What Happens to Women’s Voices During a Pandemic? Studying the Impact of COVID-19 on Women Writers in Australia

Read the 2019-2020 Stella Count analysis
Health crises such as the COVID-19 pandemic are known to exacerbate existing gender inequalities. This project aims to understand the implications of the pandemic on gender bias in Australian society and culture by quantitatively tracking its impact on the careers of women writers, and by developing strategies to ensure that the Australian culture that emerges from this period is one in which women’s voices are heard and valued.
Aims
The project will track publication, submission, production, reception and event metrics for three interrelated groups of women writers - Creative Writers (including playwrights); cultural critics/journalists, and literary studies academics - to understand the impact of COVID-19 on the ability of Australian women writers to reach audiences.
- How has the impact of COVID-19 impacted women writers across different sectors of the arts economy?
- What are the most effective strategies to track the impact of COVID-19 on intersectional identities and black, indigenous and writers of colour?
- How do we ensure women’s voices remain valued and heard in Australian public culture beyond COVID-19?
