Nationalism, medicine and the body: a master class

Presented by the South Asia Regional Institute with the support of the Research School of Asia and the Pacific.

Professor Joseph Alter of Yale-NUS College will be holding a master class, "Nationalism, medicine and the body" for PhD students and early career researchers. Taking Professor Alter's work on nature cure and Ayurveda in India as its starting point, the master class will investigate how visceral experiences can affect the formation of political and cultural identities. Discussions of gender and sexuality as they relate to medicine and the body would be welcomed.

Registration is free, but places are limited. Those wishing to participate should register by email with Patrick McCartney at psdmccartney@gmail.com and set out a paragraph describing their research interests.

Professor Joseph Alter earned concurrent BA/MA degrees in Anthropology from Wesleyan University in 1982 and a PhD in Anthropology from the University of California, Berkeley in 1989. He has taught at Kalamazoo College, Western Michigan University, Goshen College and the University of Pittsburgh. In conjunction with teaching and research focused on South Asia, Professor Alter is the academic director of a Yale-NUS CIPE semester study abroad programme based in the Himalayas of North India.
