Gender Institute 1st anniversary

The ANU Gender Institute celebrated its first anniversary on Friday 9 March 2012 in the Hedley Bull Centre at the ANU with ninety guests attending. We were treated by a panel looking at issues to do with Women in Science, congratulated the winners of the 2011 Gender Institute prizes and heard more about the ANU Inspiring Women project. A free light lunch was served during the event. A podcast of the event is available below.

The chair for the lunch time event, inaugural convenor of the Institute Professor Kim Rubenstein provided an overview of the numerous achievements of the Gender Institute in its first year. We were treated to three excellent speakers who provided a diverse range of thoughts and inspiration about Women in Science, Professor Margaret Sheil, CEO of the ARC and soon to become Provost of the University of Melbourne, Distinguished Research, Professor Emerita Lorraine Code, York University in Toronto, and Professor Susan Scott, Department of Quantum Science, Physics Education Centre, ANU, first female ANU Professor in Physics.

The Gender Institute awarded and congratulations our prize winners for excellence in gender research:

  • Ashley Walsh and Jessica Clark, joint winners, each awarded a $500 prize for their undergraduate honours theses
  • Wienta Diarsvitri received the $500 prize for a 2011 journal article
  • Dr Gabrielle Simm won $1,000 for her PhD thesis

Karen Downing shared with us the exciting ANU Inspiring Women project and invited us to nominate inspirational women in academic, administrative, professional, and technical or support areas that should be recognised for their contribution to ANU.

The Gender Institute celebration event culminated with an opportunity to discuss the inspirational input over a delicious light lunch.
