Gender in IHL and the Armed Forces

Presented by the Australian Red Cross

During armed conflict existing vulnerabilities are exacerbated and women, men, boys and girls face specific challenges that stem from their gender. Women often become heads of households, men are more likely to face conscription, threats to their life or detention and both women and men face the threat of sexual violence as a weapon of war.

Join the panelists for a discussion of some of the ways gender impacts on people's experiences of armed conflict and hear four perspectives.

Panelists include:

  • SQNLDR Angeline Lewis (Legal Officer, RAAF) will speak about her research on the interests and roles of women in Iraq from 2003, both local women and Coalition forces, compared with the concept of "female engagement" in Afghanistan
  • CMDR Hugh Cameron (Legal Officer, RAN) will speak about gender in the ADF and current initiatives
  • Anna Griffin (NSW IHL Coordinator, Australian Red Cross) will speak about the International Red Cross Red Crescent Movement’s priorities and experiences
  • Sally-Anne Vincent (Director, DFAT) will speak about her experiences with gender and IHL as Australia’s Head of Aid in Afghanistan
