Feminism for the 21st century

You are invited to our 11th annual lecture to be presented by Professor Marian Sawer, Adjunct Professor in the School of Political Science and International Relations in the ANU College of Arts and Social Sciences on the topic ‘Feminism for the 21st century’.

Emeritus Professor Marian Sawer (AO, FASSA) is an Adjunct Professor in the School of Political Science and International Relations in the ANU College of Arts and Social Sciences and the former head of the Political Science Program in the ANU Research School of Social Sciences. She has researched and published widely in the fields of democratic theory and practice, electoral administration and gender politics, and has just stepped down as Vice-President of the International Political Science Association.

With the appointment of a female Prime Minister, some believe that equality has been ‘achieved’ in Australia. This mentality is known as the ‘false feminist death syndrome’ and has plagued feminism since it's existence. Marian Sawer will explore the media representation of feminism over the past century and how it differs from the story found in archives. This is a story of feminist persistence in pursuit of goals still far from achieved.

The lecture will be followed by refreshments.

The lecture is jointly presented by the ANU Archives and the Friends of the Noel Butlin Archives Centre.
