Combating modern slavery, 150th anniversary of the U.S. Emancipation Proclamation

150 years ago President Abraham Lincoln delivered the Gettysburg address. “I never, in my life, felt more certain that I was doing right than I do in signing this paper,” he said upon signing the Emancipation Proclamation into effect.

To mark the occasion renowned performer Kamahl will recite the President’s famous speech which marked the freedom of slaves.

In June 2012 US Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton honoured Dr Anne Gallagher AO, an ANU graduate, as one of ten global heroes committed to ending modern day slavery.

In recognition of her ambitious efforts to strengthen legislative and criminal justice responses to trafficking in Southeast Asia and her substantial contribution to identify the core elements of a comprehensive anti-trafficking model Dr Anne Gallagher was awarded the Trafficking in Persons Hero Award.

At the event Ambassador Bleich will make a presentation to Dr Gallagher.
