2016 annual civil society dialogue on women, peace and security

The annual civil society Dialogue on Women, Peace and Security is taking place on the 13th October 2016. The purpose of the Dialogue is to continue conversations between government and civil society about the implementation of UN Resolution 1325 through Australia’s National Action Plan (NAP). The fourth Dialogue comes after an independent interim review into Australia’s progress on the NAP as well as the Global Study into the implementation of resolution 1325. The information gathered from this event will contribute to the development of the fourth annual Report Card into Australia’s implementation of the NAP.

Agenda

As the current NAP progresses towards its completion in 2018, this Dialogue gives us a chance to look back on the progress to date, to look around at the issues that are facing us, and to look forward to future areas of focus. This year’s Dialogue will:

  • Look back – government representatives will be asked to respond to and discuss the findings of the interim review into Australia’s NAP;
  • Look around – there are many current and emerging issues that can impact the implementation of Australia’s NAP and the women, peace and security agenda more broadly. The topics of countering violent extremism, displacement, and women’s roles in peacebuilding and conflict prevention will be highlighted. We will also focus upon efforts to implement WPS in the ongoing conflict in Syria and Iraq;
  • Look forward – Papua New Guinea is a key regional partner for Australia. A specialist session on Bougainville will be held to highlight women’s role in maintaining peace and preventing further conflict;
  • Continue to work together and support shadow reporting of the NAP, as well as mapping out recommendations for the next NAP and how Civil Society will be engaged in its development.
