Women, Voice and Agency in Iraq and Afghanistan 2001 – 2011

PhD scholar Jacky Sutton will be presenting her Thesis Proposal Review Seminar entitled "Women, Voice and Agency in Iraq and Afghanistan 2001 – 2011".

Abstract:

Women’s rights were posited as central justifications for the invasions of Afghanistan and Iraq. Following the overthrow of the regimes in Kabul and Baghdad, international media coverage and development interventions in 2001 and 2003 ignored the rich history of women’s agency in national and local struggles for independence and autonomy. This research will explore the impact of international development on women media professionals in Iraq and Afghanistan, asking whether such interventions have helped or hindered women’s access to Article 19 freedoms of expression.
