Relationship Things

YWCA Canberra is excited to mark the International Week Without Violence this October by launching their revamped Relationship Things resource.

Relationship Things is a comprehensive resource and learning program that aims to prevent sexual assault and gender-based violence by equipping young people of high school age with the tools to develop and maintain safe and respectful relationships. You can read more about the resource here.

Relationship Things will be launched with a special, in-depth panel discussion hosted in partnership with the ANU Gender Institute - Relationship Things: what  young people need to know.

The panel will feature perspectives from a range of areas of expertise. Panelists include:

  • Fiona MacGregor, Director of Community Services, YWCA Canberra
  • Angela Christian-Wilkes, Year 12 student
  • Heidi Yates, Chair, ACT Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Intersex and Queer (LGBTIQ) Ministerial Advisory Council
  • Seargent Joanne Cameron, Australian Federal Police

The panel will examine key issues surrounding sex education and young people, in the context of building respectful relationships.

Topics covered by the panel will include:

  • Negotiating respect, consent and safe sex in the digital age
  • Integrating respectful relationships education into school environments
  • Where the gaps currently are for young people in terms of sex education
  • Intersectional approaches to sex education, incorporating perspectives from culturally and linguistically diverse communities, and LGBTQI people
  • The importance of primary prevention programs in ultimately ending violence against women and children.

Join us for this informative, important discussion!
