Alumnae panel: #WomenLead in Law

Join this all-female alumni panel as they discuss what it takes to not just forge a career in law, but to also be a leader in what was traditionally a male-dominated field. They will touch on their motivations, difficulties and triumphs, as well as examine the changes that need to be made for future generations to have better opportunities.

The 45-minute panel discussion will be followed by a 30-minute networking session where a light lunch will be provided. For those who can't join in-person, you can tune in via Zoom to watch the event live.

On the panel:

Elizabeth Carroll is Chief Legal Counsel at IP Australia. Over the past twelve years, she has led the legal teams of three Commonwealth agencies including as General Counsel and Executive Director of Legal and Compliance at the Australian Pesticides and Veterinary Medicines Authority, and Principal Lawyer at the Murray-Darling Basin Authority. Prior to moving inhouse, she worked for ten years in private practice.

Melanie Poole is the founder and director of See Your Change – a social enterprise that works with social change organisations and law firms to strengthen their work. Current projects that Melanie is leading include The Justice Map, a major research initiative examining mass incarceration in Australia. Melanie has also recently taken up the role of Research and Policy Director at the Foundation for Alcohol Research and Education (FARE).

Dr Heather Roberts is the leading and pioneer scholar on judicial swearing-in ceremonies. In 2015 this research was showcased in her interview with Anita Barraud on ABC Radio National’s Law Report. This interview drew on her extensive and ground-breaking archival research into the origins and contemporary practice of these ceremonies in Australian Federal Courts.

Emma Campbell (Bachelor of Laws and a Bachelor of Politics, Philosophy and Economics), President of the ANU Law Student Society, will be moderating the panel.
